1. Sources and codes used in this report
| Code | Source | What it is | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| P | prepmontcfca.com monthly pages, URL pattern https://prepmontcfca.com/expression-ecrite-<mois>-<année>/ (e.g. https://prepmontcfca.com/expression-ecrite-novembre-2026/, index https://prepmontcfca.com/sujets-expression-ecrite/) |
Monthly "combinaisons" (T1+T2+T3 sets), Aug 2022 to Nov 2026. Banner: "basés sur des sujets réels ... ce ne sont pas les originaux" | Medium: recalled and reworded, not originals |
| C | tcf-canada.ca monthly pages (https://tcf-canada.ca/expression-ecrite-mars-2025/, https://tcf-canada.ca/expression-ecrite-janvier-2026/, index https://tcf-canada.ca/expression-ecrite-sujets-dactualites/) | Same bank. Jan 2026 is identical to P, combination for combination | Medium, but a copy of P/R, not an independent witness |
| R | reussir-tcfcanada.com monthly pages (https://reussir-tcfcanada.com/octobre-2025-expression-ecrite/, https://reussir-tcfcanada.com/juin-2026-expression-ecrite/, https://reussir-tcfcanada.com/septembre-2025-expression-ecrite/, https://reussir-tcfcanada.com/mars-2025-expression-ecrite/) | Seen only through search-engine snippets, because the site returns HTTP 403 to automated reading. The snippets match P for Jun 2026 and Sep 2025, and add one Oct 2025 set | Medium |
| N | tcf-canada.net (https://tcf-canada.net/expression-ecrite, e.g. https://tcf-canada.net/expression-ecrite-Janvier-2024-Combinaison-1) | Its 2024 page matches the bank. Its 2025-2026 pages contain prompts found nowhere else (AI, smart cities, Repair Café). The site says they are "inspirés d'essais réels" | 2024: medium. 2025-26: low, and kept out of all counts (section 9) |
| B | tcfca.com subject bank, undated (https://www.tcfca.com/banque-des-sujets-du-tcf-canada-expression-ecrite/) | Titles only, no months | Used only as a cross-check |
| OFF | Official: FEI TCF Canada page (https://www.france-education-international.fr/test/tcf-canada?langue=fr, blocked to automated reading, so its facts here come from search snippets); Manuel du candidat TCF, Version A, March 2021 (https://www.afdetroit.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Manuel_du_candidat_TCF.pdf); older CIEP-era Manuel du candidat TCF Canada (https://www.afsf.com/exams/tcf/Manuel_du_candidat_TCF_Canada.pdf); FEI "sujets zéro" as reproduced by GlobalExam (https://global-exam.com/blog/fr/exemple-dexpression-ecrite-du-tcf-et-corrige/) | Format and scoring | High |
Caveat on independence (confidence: medium). I could not reach any first-hand candidate report. Reddit and its mirrors refused automated reading, and Facebook and Telegram groups are not indexed. All dated prompts therefore come from one family of compilers (R, P, C) that copy one another. Agreement between those sites does not confirm a prompt. Two things support using the bank anyway. First, the same complete T1+T2+T3 sets come back month after month in different subsets, which is what you would expect if the test reuses a fixed pool of versions. Second, every prompt has the shape, recipients and themes that the official handbook describes (section 2).
2. Official format, verified
| Fact | Detail | Source | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duration | 60 minutes for all 3 tasks, taken as a group session | OFF handbook 2021 p.18; afsf handbook p.9; FEI page | High |
| Task 1 | A message that describes, narrates and/or explains, written to one or more recipients whose status the instructions give. 60 to 120 words | OFF 2021 p.22; afsf p.11 | High |
| Task 2 | An article, letter or note for several recipients that reports an experience or tells a story, with comments, opinions or arguments that serve a stated goal (for example, to claim something or to make peace). 120 to 150 words | OFF 2021 p.22; afsf p.11-12 | High |
| Task 3 | A text (for a newspaper, a website, a colleague or a manager) that compares two viewpoints on a social issue, taken from two short documents of about 90 words each, then gives your own position. 120 to 180 words, split as 40 to 60 words comparing the two views and 80 to 120 words of your opinion | OFF 2021 p.22; afsf p.12 (the 40-60/80-120 split and the 90-word documents come from afsf) | High (the split: medium-high, as it appears only in the older handbook) |
| Word-count rule | A paper can be scored "A1 non atteint" if any task misses the required word count, is off-topic, is illegible or is not done | OFF 2021 p.24 | High |
| Memorised texts | The fraud list includes plagiarism, defined as reproducing existing documents in part or in full, "qu'ils aient été mémorisés ou copiés". Learn templates and phrase sets, never whole essays | OFF 2021 p.36 | High |
| Scoring | Two independent blind markers each give every task a level from A1 non atteint to C2. A calculation rule turns the 6 levels into a final mark out of 20, and a third marker steps in if the two disagree widely. The criteria are linguistic (range of vocabulary, grammar, spelling, sentence complexity), pragmatic (coherence, cohesion, development of the topic) and sociolinguistic (fit to the situation) | OFF 2021 p.24 | High |
| Canada-specific themes | The expression topics in TCF Canada lean toward emigration and expatriation, especially to Canada | afsf handbook p.10 | High |
| Recorrection | From the 1 September 2026 sessions, requests to re-mark the writing and speaking tests are not accepted for about one year | FEI page, via search snippet | Medium |
| Official samples | The FEI "sujets zéro" are: T1, a blog post to childhood friends about a trip you are about to take; T2, a blog post about a major celebration in your country; T3, an article for a francophone association newsletter on two opinions about food | GlobalExam page above | Medium-high |
3. How counting works
- Unit: one month-sighting is a prompt appearing on at least one source's page for a given month. The main measure, "months", counts the distinct months in which a prompt appears. "Appearances" counts every combination slot it fills, including duplicates inside a month and the same month listed on two sites.
- Coverage: 34 distinct months. P gives Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec 2023; Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec 2024; every month from Jan 2025 to Nov 2026. N adds Jan 2024. C (Mar 2025, Jan 2026) and R (Mar 2025, Sep 2025, Oct 2025, Jun 2026) add sets inside months P already covers.
- Wording varies slightly between months, such as a different person's name or a different château. Those versions are merged into one prompt and the merges are noted.
4. What repeats: top clusters per task, counted
Size of the bank: 185 distinct prompts (65 T1, 60 T2, 60 T3). They fill 324, 325 and 325 combination slots across 34 months, in 81 distinct T1+T2+T3 sets. Prompts come back as complete sets: 25 sets appear in at least 5 different months. The most frequent sets are: wedding-venue directions + learning a language + amateur vs professional cooks (12 months); surprise party + flea market + low-cost flights (11); Anna's weekend transport + neighbourhood party + school vending machines (10); weekend-trip plan + "quit everything to travel for a year" + work as asset or obstacle (10). From Jun to Nov 2026, 20 distinct sets appeared. The two most frequent were hotel + work abroad + video games, and countryside weekend + 100-guest venue + technology in schools, each in 4 of those 6 months. Source: section 10 log (P, C, R, N). Confidence: medium.
Concentration: the 15 most frequent prompts in each task account for 41% of T1, 43% of T2 and 47% of T3 sightings. The rest of each task is a long tail of prompts seen once or twice.
Task 1 (message, 60-120 words): 293 month-sightings
| Cluster (function) | Distinct prompts | Month-sightings | Share | Months present (of 34) | Last 12 months (25-12 to 26-11) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| INVITE (party, festival, concert, dinner, holiday visit) | 13 | 64 | 22% | 25 | 21 |

| PERSONAL-NEWS (new job, university, move, win, weekend) | 9 | 33 | 11% | 21 | 10 |
| TRANSPORT-INFO (getting around, getting to a venue) | 3 | 29 | 10% | 16 | 8 |
| PROPOSE-ACTIVITY (sport together, day out, trip plan) | 6 | 28 | 10% | 19 | 6 |
| SELF-INTRO (language exchange, newcomers' paper, sports-partner ad) | 3 | 19 | 6% | 16 | 5 |
| DESCRIBE-PLACE (your country, neighbourhood, premises, celebration) | 5 | 17 | 6% | 14 | 6 |
| REQUEST-HELP (moving, redecorating, party) | 3 | 14 | 5% | 13 | 3 |

| BUY-SELL (sell your bike) | 1 | 9 | 3% | 9 | 4 |
| INSTRUCTIONS, DESCRIBE-OBJECT, TESTIMONY, COMPLAINT | 6 | 17 | 6% | - | 3 |
The most frequent single T1 prompts are: surprise birthday party (a20, 13 months); wedding-venue directions (a09, 12); weekend-trip plan (a24, 10); Anna's weekend transport (a08, 10); selling a bike (a23, 9 months / 13 appearances). Next, at 7 months each: language-exchange ad (a19), "Bienvenue" newcomer note (a33), places in your region (a26), hotel for friends (a01), neighbourhood gym (a03), countryside weekend (a10) and transport for Mehdi (a14). In the last 12 months the leaders are the gym (a03) and the countryside weekend (a10), each in 5 months, then the château, the bike, the hotel and "present your country" (4 each). Register: about 88% of T1 sightings are informal messages to friends or family (tu, or vous to a group of friends). About 12% (35 sightings) need a formal or neutral register: the newcomers' paper, ads, landlord or estate agency, the TV testimony, inviting colleagues, customer service.
Task 2 (narrative / blog / article, 120-150 words): 293 month-sightings
| Cluster | Distinct prompts | Month-sightings | Share | Months present | Last 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EVENT-REVIEW (party, festival, flea market, concert, contest, open day) | 22 | 103 | 35% | 31 | 30 |
| WORK-STUDY (first week in a job or at university, course, gym class, language learning) | 10 | 48 | 16% | 29 | 16 |
| TRAVEL-ABROAD (work or study abroad, holiday, arriving in a new country) | 8 | 41 | 14% | 21 | 15 |
| COMMUNITY (volunteering, clean-up, elderly person, host student, flat-share) | 6 | 25 | 9% | 16 | 4 |
| PERSON-CULTURE (admired person, favourite artist, eating habits at home) | 3 | 20 | 7% | 17 | 4 |
| FORMAL (100-guest venue proposal, travel-agency complaint, talk at a school) | 3 | 20 | 7% | 15 | 9 |
| LIFE-CHANGE (new diet, moved to the countryside, quit social media, new hobby) | 5 | 19 | 6% | 12 | 6 |
| OPINION-ADVICE (year of travel, bakery career change, tips for visitors) | 3 | 17 | 6% | 14 | 3 |
The most frequent T2 prompts are: learning a foreign language (b11, 12 months); flea market (b20, 11); neighbourhood party (b10, 10); "quit everything to travel for a year" (b24, 10); proposing a 100-guest venue to management (b12, 10); favourite-artist contest (b30, 8); studying abroad (b18, 8). In the last 12 months: the 100-guest venue (b12) and the memorable event (b03) lead with 5 months each, then learning a language, working abroad and first week in a new job (4 each). Text types are dominated by the blog or forum post: "blog" appears in prompts worth 121 of the 293 sightings, "forum" in 39, "message to friends" in 43, "letter" in 31, "article" in 24 and "email" in 19 (some prompts allow more than one type). Formal register is needed in only about 9% of T2 sightings (25).
Task 3 (compare two documents + opinion, 120-180 words): 288 month-sightings
| Theme cluster | Distinct prompts | Month-sightings | Share | Months present | Last 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FOOD-CONSUMPTION (fast food, cooks, shops vs supermarkets, eating out, brands, ads, meat) | 10 | 50 | 17% | 28 | 9 |
| WORK (naps, equality, work as asset or obstacle, office meal delivery, student jobs, pets at work, CV photo) | 10 | 43 | 15% | 23 | 15 |
| SCHOOL (vending machines, tablets, uniforms, cameras, homework, private schools, meat-free menus) | 8 | 42 | 15% | 19 | 15 |
| CITY-ENV (car bans, low-cost flights, free transport, cycling, plastic, city vs countryside) | 9 | 42 | 15% | 20 | 12 |
| SCREENS (video games, connected objects, online learning, e-books, online shopping) | 5 | 32 | 11% | 21 | 7 |
| CHILDREN (strict parents, pets, reading, TV, technology, parental controls) | 6 | 31 | 11% | 20 | 12 |
| HOME-SOCIETY (flat-sharing, short-term rentals, retirement homes, poverty, living with parents) | 7 | 25 | 9% | 17 | 10 |
| LEISURE-CULTURE (zoos, hunting, free museums, street art, travelling alone) | 5 | 23 | 8% | 16 | 7 |
The most frequent T3 debates are: video games (c01, 16 months / 21 appearances, the single most repeated prompt in the bank); amateur vs professional cooks (c11, 12); low-cost flights (c20, 11); car bans in city centres (c19, 10); work as asset or obstacle (c24, 10); vending machines in high schools (c10, 10); strict parents (c23, 9); fast food (c05, 8); flat-sharing (c14, 8). In the last 12 months: video games, children's reading and technology in schools (5 each), then cooks, car bans and gender equality at work (4 each). Children and school together make up 25% of T3 sightings (73 of 288). The two documents almost always take opposite sides, usually Doc 1 for and Doc 2 against, but the order is sometimes reversed (fast food in 26-10 C3, uniforms in 24-06 C2). Read both before deciding which is which.
5. Text types and language functions each task demands
| Task | Function (share of sightings) | Typical text type | Grammar and phrases it forces |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Invite or propose 31% (92); describe or recommend a place 23% (66); practical info, directions, instructions 12% (36); give personal news 11% (33); introduce yourself, ad, housing request 11% (33); ask for help 5%; sell 3%; formal testimony or complaint 2% | Informal email or message (about 88%). The rest are an ad, a note for a newcomers' paper, a formal email | Futur proche and futur simple (plans); je t'invite à / ça te dirait de...? (inviting); se trouver, à côté de, il y a, on peut (describing a place); imperative and prendre la ligne..., descendre à... (directions and instructions); prices, dates, times; a question asking for a reply (Réponds-moi avant...); passé composé for news |
| T2 | Narrate a past experience, then judge it, then recommend or advise. Every T2 prompt asks for narration plus an opinion. About 9% add a formal purpose (complain, propose a venue) | Blog or forum post (most common), message to friends, letter, article, email | Passé composé plus imparfait (events vs setting and feelings); ce qui m'a plu / déçu, c'est...; j'ai trouvé que...; je vous conseille / recommande de...; time markers (d'abord, ensuite, finalement); comparisons with before (avant..., maintenant...) |
| T3 | Compare two viewpoints (40-60 words), then argue your own position (80-120 words) on every prompt | Article for a newspaper or website, or a note to a colleague | Reporting verbs (selon le document 1, l'auteur affirme / estime que...); contrast (alors que, tandis que, en revanche, d'un côté... de l'autre); concession (certes... mais, bien que + subjunctive); opinion (je pense que, à mon avis, il me semble que); cause and consequence (car, puisque, donc, c'est pourquoi); a recommendation (il faudrait que + subjunctive) |
6. Eight reusable templates and phrase sets, ranked by coverage
The skeletons below are my own wording. Learn the frames and phrase sets, not whole texts: the official handbook counts reproducing memorised texts as plagiarism (section 2).
| # | Template | Covers (share of that task's sightings) | Skeleton |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | T1-A Invitation or proposal | INVITE + PROPOSE-ACTIVITY = 92/293 = 31% of T1 | Salut [prénom] ! → hook (J'ai une super nouvelle / Tu es libre le... ?) → what + when + where (Je t'invite à... le samedi 12 à 19 h, au...) → programme (D'abord on va..., ensuite...) → practical details (price, transport, what to bring) → reply request (Dis-moi avant jeudi si tu peux venir) → Bises / À bientôt |
| 2 | T1-B Describe, recommend, give directions | RECOMMEND-PLACE + DESCRIBE-PLACE + TRANSPORT-INFO + INSTRUCTIONS = 102/293 = 35% of T1 | Answer the request (Tu m'as demandé..., voici...) → location (se trouve à 5 minutes de..., en plein centre) → features (il y a..., on peut...) → prices and hours (l'abonnement coûte..., c'est ouvert de... à...) → how to get there (prends la ligne 2, descends à..., puis marche...) → advice (je te conseille de..., n'oublie pas de...) |
| 3 | T1-C News, self-introduction, ad or request | PERSONAL-NEWS + SELF-INTRO + HOUSING + REQUEST-HELP + BUY-SELL = 89/293 = 30% of T1 | News or purpose (Je viens de commencer... / Je vous écris pour...) → 3 concrete details (place, people, how it feels; or size, price, condition) → what you need (Pourrais-tu m'aider à... ? / Seriez-vous disponible pour... ?) → closing. Practise a tu and a vous version. Frames 1-3 together cover 97% of T1 |
| 4 | T2-A Experience narrative + verdict | EVENT-REVIEW + WORK-STUDY + TRAVEL-ABROAD + COMMUNITY + LIFE-CHANGE = 236/293 = 81% of T2 | Context (Le mois dernier, j'ai participé à...) → 3-4 events in passé composé, with setting and feelings in imparfait → highlight (Ce qui m'a le plus plu, c'est...) → a drawback, which adds nuance (Seul petit bémol : ...) → verdict and recommendation (Je vous conseille vivement de...) |
| 5 | T2-B Opinion, advice or formal letter | OPINION-ADVICE + FORMAL + PERSON-CULTURE = 57/293 = 19% of T2 | Madame, Monsieur, / forum greeting → purpose (Je vous écris pour vous proposer / me plaindre de...) → your experience as evidence → 2 arguments or offers → request or advice → formal closing (Je vous prie d'agréer...) |
| 6 | T3 universal two-part frame | 100% of T3 (288) | Part 1 (40-60 words): Le thème de [X] divise. Selon le document 1, [position + 1 reason]. En revanche, le document 2 estime que [position + 1 reason]. Part 2 (80-120 words): À mon avis, ... D'abord, ... De plus, ... Certes, ..., mais ... C'est pourquoi je pense qu'il faudrait que... |
| 7 | T3 argument banks by theme (5-6 ready-made arguments each, in both directions) | SCHOOL + CHILDREN + FOOD + WORK + CITY-ENV + SCREENS = 240/288 = 83% of T3 (the top four alone: 177/288 = 61%) | For each theme, memorise reusable arguments: health, cost or money, environment, social ties, freedom or independence, safety, equality, time savings. These generic arguments fit almost every debate in the bank |
| 8 | Cross-task opinion and connector set | All three tasks | Opinion (je trouve que, à mon avis, personnellement); contrast (mais, cependant, en revanche, alors que); addition (de plus, en outre); cause (parce que, car, grâce à); consequence (donc, c'est pourquoi); concession (même si, bien que + subjunctive); conclusion (bref, en somme) |
7. Work-to-reward order and the prompts to rehearse first
- The T3 frame (template 6) comes first. One frame applies to every T3. T3 is the longest task (120-180 words) and the one that tests comparing and arguing. Missing its word count or going off-topic risks "A1 non atteint" (section 2). Then build the theme banks in order of share: SCHOOL+CHILDREN (25%), FOOD-CONSUMPTION (17%), WORK (15%), CITY-ENV (15%), SCREENS (11%).
- T1 templates 1 and 2: two skeletons cover 66% of T1 sightings and use the simplest grammar. Add template 3 to reach 97%.
- T2 template 4: one narrative frame covers 81% of T2 sightings.
- Write a full answer for each of the most recurrent and most recent prompts. Most frequent: T1 a20, a09, a24, a08, a23. Most recent: a03, a10, a01, a04. T2 b11, b20, b10, b24, b12, b03, b01, b04. T3 c01, c11, c20, c19, c24, c10, c23, then the most recent c03, c12, c04.
- The tail comes last. The 22 T1, 18 T2 and 22 T3 prompts seen in 3 months or fewer are covered by the templates above. Do not prepare them one by one.
Open questions and limitations
- No first-hand candidate testimony could be reached (Reddit refused automated reading; Facebook and Telegram are not indexed), so the authenticity of individual prompts stays medium confidence.
- The bank is incomplete. R shows sets that P does not (for example Oct 2025: thank Nicolas for a meal and give the recipe, plus two days on a farm). The paywalled formation-tcfcanada.com lists 8 to 76 combinations per month for 2026 (https://www.formation-tcfcanada.com/epreuve/expression-ecrite/sujets-actualites). The real pool is therefore larger than the 81 sets counted here.
- FEI publishes no per-task weight for the score out of 20, only "a calculation rule" over the 6 task levels (OFF 2021 p.24).
- The 40-60 / 80-120 split for T3 comes from the older CIEP-era handbook. The 2021 handbook gives only 120-180.
- The suspension of re-marking from September 2026 comes from a search snippet of the bot-blocked FEI page. Confirm it before relying on a re-mark.
8. Full prompt table (every prompt collected)
Each row is one prompt, with variants merged. "Seen in" gives number of distinct months / total appearances, then the months as YY-MM, then the source codes from section 1. Prompts are sorted by months seen within each task.
