Gap fill 1: the exam's own French vocabulary

Lemma lists counted from real TCF Canada and TEF Canada material. Prepared 4 November 2026 for the NCLC 7 course (TCF Canada as the main test, TEF Canada as the backup, per exam-analysis.md §1.1).

Question answered. Which French lemmas appear in the most distinct prompts or documents, when each recurring prompt is weighted by the number of months it was sighted? Every count below comes from the French text of the sources in section 1. Nothing comes from a generic frequency list.

Confidence tags. [H] a count made directly from the named sources, or a fact stated by an official document. [M] how well those sources stand for the live exam. [L] my own coding or inference.

Key results

• Corpus. Group (a), official samples: 241 units, 9,649 running words, from 8 official or publisher documents. Group (b), candidate-recalled banks: 1,404 writing listings on 52 monthly pages (Aug 2022–Nov 2026), merged into 347 distinct prompts and 1,361 month-sightings; 4,175 speaking listings over 50 months, merged into 1,276 distinct prompts and 3,631 month-sightings. In all, 3,769 distinct lemmas once proper names are removed [H].
• Coverage (four skills weighted equally, each prompt counted once per month sighted): the top 500 lemmas cover 81.2% of running words, the top 1,000 89.9%, the top 1,500 94.2% and the top 2,000 96.7% [H, in-sample].
• Reading needs the most words. The top 1,000 cover 83.4% of reading text but 95.5% of speaking prompts. On a mock test the ranking had never seen (Hachette's reading section, held out of the ranking), the top 1,000 covered 76.5% and the top 2,000 85.0%. Plan with these hold-out figures, not the in-sample ones [M].
• Writing and speaking prompts recycle a small vocabulary. On the 3 most recent bank months (Sep–Nov 2026), held out, the top 1,000 covered 88.9% of writing-prompt words and 91.3% of speaking-prompt words [M].
• Task vocabulary is fixed and can be learned first. Poser appears in 1,002 of 1,811 speaking-T2 month-sightings and interroger in 566; prix, tarif or coût in 691. Penser appears in 650 of 1,822 speaking-T3 month-sightings and pourquoi in 424. Contre (from "pour ou contre ?") appears in 194 of 451 writing-T3 month-sightings, permettre in 201 [H].
• Clusters. Section 6 gives a lemma set for each of 47 TCF clusters. Five clusters in the analysis have no vocabulary theme: society and values, volunteering and community, pet-, child- and house-sitting, admired person or artist, and TEF news-in-brief. Their sets are in 6.1, with five partly covered clusters [H for the counts; L for the cluster coding].

How to use this in the course. Learn the master list (section 3) in rank order: it already folds in all four skills. When a writing or speaking cluster comes up in the plan, add that cluster's set from section 6. Use the per-task lists (section 5) to check that each task's prompt words are known before practising that task.

1. The corpus

* Running words = word tokens after lemmatisation, without numbers or proper names. For group (b), every listing is counted here, before repeats are merged.

1.1 How the counting works

• Reading the sources. All pages and PDFs were read on 4 November 2026 by a script that parsed them in memory; nothing was saved. Only the French text of exam material was kept: prompts, documents, questions, answer options, printed transcripts and instructions. Covers, scoring explanations, answer keys and page furniture were dropped. Text inside images could not be read (FEI's 4 reading documents, 3 LFA reading leaflets, Charlotte's email in the TCF demo) [H].
• Units. Official samples: each document, each question with its options, and each distinct instruction is one unit, weight 1. Banks: each distinct prompt counts once per month it was listed, so a prompt seen in 22 months weighs 22. A prompt listed twice in one month counts once. When a month lists only a T3 title, it gets the words of that prompt's full version [H].
• Merging repeats. Rewordings of one prompt were merged automatically (IDF-weighted cosine similarity of content words; thresholds 0.45 for writing T1 and T2, 0.55 for speaking T2, 0.62 for speaking T3, and title 0.6 or documents 0.5 for writing T3, with shared rare words required). This keeps some rewordings apart, so my distinct-prompt counts are higher than the hand-merged bank's (tcf-ee-bank.md: 65 T1, 60 T2 and 60 T3 prompts over 34 months). Lemma weights barely depend on this: a lemma's weight is the number of prompt-months that contain it [L for the merge, H for the counts].
• Lemmas. Apple's NaturalLanguage lemmatiser (NLTagger, French, macOS 26.6), plus about 150 corrections and context rules from an audit of the 1,700 most widespread lemmas. Examples: étaient → être (the tool said étayer), faut → falloir, cours stays cours, suis → être, elles → elle; gender markers such as ami(e), answer letters and line-break hyphens removed. Elided forms count as the full word (l' → le, qu' → que). Hyphenated words stay whole (week-end, peut-être) except verb–pronoun inversions (pouvez-vous = pouvoir + vous). Proper names (Canada, Québec, Toronto, Montréal, Cédric) are left out of every list and every coverage figure [M].
• Ranking. Within a skill, lemmas are ranked by the share of that skill's units that contain them (ties: more tokens first). The master list gives each skill one equal vote, because NCLC 7 is needed in all four: score = the sum over the four skills of 1/(60 + rank in that skill) (reciprocal-rank fusion). Writing and speaking have 5,022 units against 211 for listening and reading, so a pooled count would have buried the listening and reading words [L for the choice of method].
• Left out. tcfca.com's 66 Task 1 "questions personnelles": the same 5 questions appear in all 11 months and the sixth is a fill-in template, so they look written by the site, not recalled by candidates. Also the TCF manual's 3 language-structure items and Hachette's lexique-et-structure section (neither exists in TCF Canada or TEF Canada), and tcf-canada.ca's February 2025 page, which is empty [H].

2. How much of the exam text the top lemmas cover

Share of running words whose lemma is in the master list's top 500 / 1,000 / 1,500 / 2,000. Distinct counts each prompt or document once; weighted counts each prompt once per month it was sighted [H].

What the tables mean:

• The in-sample figures are upper bounds, because the list was built from the same texts. The hold-out rows show what to expect on a paper the list has not seen.
• Reading is where the list runs out. 1,577 different lemmas occur in only 120 reading units, while 3,645 speaking units use 1,788. TEF press and administrative texts (Q23–40) bring most of the rare words.
• Writing and speaking prompts repeat, so the list carries over well to new months: the most recent months' prompts are covered almost as well as the old ones.
• Proper names are 0.6%–2.0% of running words, depending on the skill, and need no learning.

3. Master list: the top 1,500 lemmas across all four skills

How to read it:

• Read across, then down. Rank comes from an equal vote of the four skills (section 1.1).
• † marks a grammar word (article, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, être, avoir, and similar). Section 7 lists them on their own.
• The letters after each lemma show the skills where it is among the 400 most widespread lemmas and appears in at least 2 units: L listening, R reading, W writing, S speaking. "–" means none of the four: the lemma earns its place by being moderately common in several skills.
• Lemmas are dictionary forms: learn aller, recognise vais, allez, irai. Nouns are given in the singular and adjectives in the masculine singular.

6. Lemma sets for the recurring clusters

How these sets were built [L]:

• Each merged prompt was tagged with every cluster whose keywords it contains. A prompt can sit in two clusters, so the sizes here are larger than the one-cluster-per-prompt coding in exam-analysis.md §2.3–2.4.
• A lemma enters a cluster's set if it is not a grammar word, occurs in at least 2 different prompts of the cluster and in at least 5% of its month-sightings, and is at least 1.5 times as common in the cluster as in the rest of the same task. Sets are ordered by log-likelihood (G²), strongest first.
• So each set is what the cluster adds on top of the master list. The number after a lemma = month-sightings in that cluster containing it.

Which clusters have no vocabulary theme. The task names five such clusters without listing them, so I checked every cluster in exam-analysis.md §2.3–2.4 against the 15 themes in its §4.1. Five match no theme at all, and I take these to be the five:

1. Society and values (speaking T3; TEF writing B).
2. Volunteering and community (writing T2; speaking T2; TEF speaking B).
3. Pet-, child- and house-sitting (speaking T2; writing T1 instructions).
4. Admired person or artist (writing T2).
5. TEF news-in-brief openings (TEF writing A).

Five more are only partly covered and are included below: personal news and self-introduction (writing T1), formal letters and complaints (writing T2), life change (writing T2), and health (speaking T3; theme 7 covers health only through food).

8. Caveats

• Group (b) is one family of sites that copy each other (prepmontcfca, tcf-canada.ca, tcfca.com). They say their prompts are based on real subjects but are not the originals (prepmontcfca index; banner on every tcf-canada.ca page). Their wording, not FEI's, drives the writing and speaking counts [M].
• The listening list reflects what you read on screen, not what you hear. No sample prints its audio except FEI's 3 short scripts, so listening units are mostly questions and answer options. For words you will hear, the reading and speaking lists are the better guide [H for the gap; L for the advice].
• TCF reading is thin. FEI's 4 reading documents are images, so only their questions and options count. TEF material therefore drives the reading list (115 of 120 units) [H].
• TEF writing and speaking rest on 5 official units per section, so their lists are inventories, not rankings [H].
• Lemmatiser errors remain. The audit fixed the systematic ones. Some participles used as adjectives sit under their verb (intéressé under intéresser), and noun–verb pairs are kept apart on purpose (voyage, voyager) [M].
• Cluster tags are keyword rules, several per prompt, not checked prompt by prompt [L].
• 2026 weighs more in speaking than in writing. tcfca.com's 2026 blocks are long (May 2026 alone has over 200 T2 and 200 T3 items), while prepmontcfca lists 4 to 37 sets a month [H for the counts].
