Everything for the 12-minute speaking test: the IDs that the calendar and the voice-mode sessions use, how the examiner runs each task, interview cards for all 13 official T1 themes, question lists for the top role-plays, and monologue frames with idea banks for the top debates.

Built from exam-analysis.md sections 2.4, 3, 4 and 5, research/tcf-eo-bank.md and research/gap-5.md. "18/33" means a prompt was listed in 18 of the 33 months checked. Prep sites copy each other, so treat counts as a ranking, not as exact odds.

The FEI rule. Reproducing existing texts, memorised or copied, counts as plagiarism and fraud, with cancelled results and a ban of several years (FEI candidate manual, 2021 edition, p.36; exam-analysis.md section 2.3). The clause covers every paper, speaking included. Everything in this kit is a frame, a phrase set or an idea bank. Fill the blanks with your own life, swap the examples for your own, and never learn a whole answer by heart. The one model answer (section 5.6) is labelled as a study model: read it to see how the pieces join, then speak your own version.

How to use the IDs. Ask the voice-mode examiner for an ID ("Give me S2-05", "Run SET-S3A"), or follow the IDs the calendar sets for the day. Sections 3–5 hold one card per ID, under the same ID.

1. ID table

1.1 T1: the 13 official interview themes (S1)

The examiner's sheet is a list of 13 themes, not set questions (FEI official demo, February 2022). "Frequency" counts how many of 8 sources (the TCF Canada manual and 7 prep sites) name a matching question (tcf-eo-bank.md section 5). SKIPPED marks the 5 official themes that prep sites leave out (their 7 favourite themes cover only the other 8): give these extra practice. "Cluster" points to the vocabulary theme of the same subject in exam-analysis.md section 4.1 (theme numbers in brackets).

ID Theme (English) The examiner might say (my wording) Cluster: vocabulary theme (4.1) Frequency

1.2 T2: role-plays (S2)

"Card" is how the examiner might read the subject aloud (my wording). The cue words in brackets come from the bank's "ask about" lists (tcf-eo-bank.md sections 6.2 and Appendix B) and, for the demo cards, from FEI's demo. Real cards may word them differently. Frequency: months listed in the bank (out of 24) + the extra check (out of 8) = combined (out of 32). Clusters with their share of 888 T2 appearances: events 17.5%, classes and clubs 16.8%, travel 15.3%, newcomer life 11.3%, work 6.9%, sitting 6.1%, volunteering 2.7%.

1.4 Whole sets that come back

A real sitting appears to reuse whole 5-prompt sets: the examiner's sheet holds 5 subjects per task and picks one. Each of these two sets was listed in 7 months between June 2023 and September 2026 (2023-06, 2024-03, 2024-09, 2025-09, 2026-01, 2026-05, 2026-09; tcf-eo-bank.md section 4). Learning a set prepares you for any of its 5 subjects.

ID The 5 subjects Where each one is covered
SET-S3A (1) life without TV; (2) do professional athletes earn too much? (7/24 alone); (3) do children spend too much time on screens? (7/24); (4) must you change your habits when you settle in a new country? (7/24); (5) if you moved to Canada, would you find work easily? (7/24) (1) = S3-05. (2)–(5) are SET-S3A.2 to SET-S3A.5 in section 5.5
SET-S2a (1) a friend's advice for your job interview; (2) pet-sitting for a neighbour; (3) tourist office, cheap weekend; (4) sports club reception; (5) a friend offers you a room in a Toronto flat-share (1) = S2-12, (2) = S2-02, (3) = S2-09, (4) = S2-01. (5) is SET-S2a.5 in section 4.5

2. Format and examiner behaviour

From FEI's official speaking demo (February 2022; the 2024 manual names it as the speaking example for TCF Canada) and six FEI and CIEP manuals, as read in gap-5.md, plus exam-analysis.md section 2.4. [H] = written in an official document; [L] = prep sites or inference.

2.1 The 12 minutes

Part Time Preparation What the examiner does What you do
Before the recording — — Explains the three parts. Says the interview is recorded and rated twice, in the room and at FEI, and that you may ask at any time for a word or a question to be repeated or rephrased. Asks your first name and surname and repeats them [H] Ask any question about the format now. This is the only moment English is allowed (2018 TCF Canada manual p.25) [H]
T1 guided interview 2 min None Says this part lasts two minutes and asks you to introduce yourself [H]. Then asks questions drawn from the 13 themes, one at a time, until 2:00. No set number of questions [H]; prep-site model interviews have 3–5, median 3 [L] Introduce yourself in 30–40 seconds, then answer each question in three steps: answer, detail, example. Short answers mean more questions
T2 interaction 3 min 30 of dialogue 2 min, notes on the draft sheet only, not on the card. 5 min 30 in all Hands you one of 5 subjects and reads it aloud. The card states both roles and gives 3–4 cue words in brackets [H]. Answers in role and cooperatively. Nothing official tells the examiner to hold back, give partial answers or add surprises: 0 of 7 documents [H]. In 15 prep-site model dialogues, 72 of 210 examiner lines (34%) attach a condition such as a deposit, a limit, a fee or a deadline [L] You may start before 2:00 if ready. You speak first and you lead, for the full 3 min 30. You may ask for more detail or a repeat at any time [H]. 2 of the 5 demo cards reverse the roles: you interview the examiner [H]
T3 point of view 4 min 30 None Puts one of 5 questions to you, spoken only, with no card [H]. Officially a monologue: you argue with examples and justifications, trying to convince. The only documented interruption is when time runs out [H]. 5 of 9 prep sites say the examiner may cut in to relaunch you, ask for a precision or challenge you; none gives a frequency [L] Take a position in the first 30 seconds and keep talking until stopped. If a short prompt comes, answer it in one or two sentences and go back to your plan (section 5.2)

The 12 minutes include the 2 minutes of T2 preparation [H]. TCF Canada candidates get draft paper for speaking (FEI manual p.28) [H]. The examiner may interrupt you when a part's time is up (2018 manual p.25) [H]. Being stopped mid-sentence is normal and costs you nothing.

2.2 Rules that shape your practice

2.3 Survival phrases

Learn these first: they work in every task.

Situation French English
You didn't catch the question « Pourriez-vous répéter la question, s'il vous plaît ? » Could you repeat the question, please?
You need it in other words « Pourriez-vous reformuler, s'il vous plaît ? » Could you rephrase that, please?
One word is unknown « Excusez-moi, je ne connais pas le mot "___". Qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ? » Sorry, I don't know the word "___". What does it mean?
» Could you speak a little more slowly, please?
Checking you understood « Si j'ai bien compris, vous me demandez si… ? » If I've understood correctly, you're asking whether…?
Buying two seconds « C'est une bonne question. Laissez-moi réfléchir un instant. » That's a good question. Let me think for a moment.
» I can't find the exact word, but it's a thing used for… / a person who… / a place where…
Correcting yourself « Pardon, je reprends. » / « Je veux dire… » Sorry, let me start again. / I mean…
You lost your thread « Je disais donc que… » So, I was saying that…
T2: ready before 2:00 « Je suis prêt. » / « Je suis prête. » I'm ready. (man / woman)
T2: a repeat, in role « Pardon, vous avez dit à quelle heure ? » / « Tu peux répéter le prix ? » Sorry, what time did you say? / Can you say the price again?
Stopped at time « D'accord, merci. » All right, thank you.

Québec note (exam-analysis.md theme 23): cards set in Canada may use words you should recognise, though you speak standard French: la fin de semaine (the weekend), le souper (the evening meal; in Québec le dîner is lunch and le déjeuner breakfast), le cellulaire (mobile phone), le dépanneur (corner shop), magasiner (to go shopping), le courriel (email).

3. T1: guided interview (2 minutes)

How it runs. The examiner asks you to introduce yourself, then picks themes from the official 13 until 2:00 (section 1.1). No document sets a number of questions: short answers simply bring more of them [H].

The answer pattern (4 prep sources agree, tcf-eo-bank.md section 2): answer → one detail (where, how often, why) → one example. About 20–30 seconds per answer. Never one word, never a two-minute speech.

How to build your cards.

3.1 Self-introduction frame (30–40 seconds)

3.3 T1 drill

4. T2: role-play (2 min preparation + 3 min 30)

How it runs. The examiner hands you one card and reads it aloud. It states both roles and gives 3–4 cue words in brackets. You get 2 minutes to make notes on the draft sheet. Then you speak first, you lead, and you keep it going for 3 min 30. The examiner answers your questions in role, cooperatively, often with a realistic condition attached [H for the rules; L for the conditions]. On 2 of the 5 demo cards you are the one who chooses, and you interview the examiner as the applicant (section 4.4).

Shape of the 3 min 30 (prep-site consensus, tcf-eo-bank.md section 6.4):

  1. Greet and say why you are there (15 seconds).
  2. Ask 8–12 questions grouped by heading, reacting to each answer with a short comment or a follow-up (3 minutes). Each card below lists 12, so you have spares. Opal's model dialogues run to about 14 examiner lines. One prep site says the examiner manual expects at least 5 of your questions or follow-ups; that is unverified, and it would only be a minimum.
  3. Sum up and close (15 seconds).

Cover every cue word on the card, then add more from the headings below.

4.1 The universal question card

Your 2-minute preparation sheet (keywords only, never sentences):

Open: Bonjour… je viens / je vous appelle au sujet de… (vous or tu? → circle one)
Cue words: ______ ______ ______ ______
Options | Prix | Horaires | Lieu + accès | Personnes + niveau | Conditions | Équipement
Close: récapituler → merci → décision

Register. The card states both roles, and the sociolinguistic criterion rates whether your register fits [H].

Three ways to ask the same question (grammar #3). Use the first two with friends; mix in the third with staff for B2 variety.

The seven headings

Counts are month-sightings in the T2 bank's French text, out of 1,811 (gap-1.md), or the share of the 241 bank prompts that ask for it (tcf-eo-bank.md section 6.3).

5. T3: point of view (4 min 30)

How it runs. The examiner reads one question aloud, with no card and no preparation time, and you argue for 4 min 30, with examples and justifications, trying to convince. Officially it is a monologue; the only documented interruption is at time-up. Some examiners may ask a short question, most plausibly if you stop early [H for the design; L for the prompts]. So the skill is sustained, structured speech that survives 0–2 short prompts.

5.1 The three frames and the timing plan

Which frame? From the first words of 276 bank questions over 935 appearances (tcf-eo-bank.md section 7.3; one researcher's coding):

5.2 Recovery lines and phrases that keep you talking

Three recovery lines for a short examiner prompt. Answer in one or two sentences, then go back to your plan.

  3. Asked for a precision or the other side: « Vous avez raison de poser la question. » You're right to ask. To be more precise, ___. And that brings me to another aspect: ___.

If you did not understand the prompt: « Pardon, pourriez-vous reformuler la question ? » Sorry, could you rephrase the question?

5.3 Idea banks for the top 12 questions

Each bank gives a position, three arguments with an example each, a concession, a conclusion and key chunks. Swap the examples for your own whenever you can: a real story from your life is worth more than a borrowed one, and the banks are to be adapted, never recited.

IMM, 8/33 months, frame A. Also feeds SET-S3A.5.

5.4 Idea banks for the 5 official demo questions

From FEI's official demo (February 2022) [H]. The examiner's wording and the ideas are mine.

S3-D1 What makes a country pleasant to live in?

IMM (bank coding), frame B.

S3-D2 Which values of your home country are worth keeping?

IMM and society and values, frame B.

S3-D3 If you did humanitarian work, which would you choose, and why?

S3-D4 Does travel make us better people?

Travel, frame A. Shares ideas with S3-02.

S3-D5 Can we live without oil?

Environment, frame A.

5.5 SET-S3A: the four other questions of the set

SET-S3A.1 is S3-05 (life without TV). The other four were each listed in 7 of 24 bank months. Each block below is shorter: it borrows the argument types of the bank named, so learn that bank first.

SET-S3A.2 Do professional athletes earn too much?

« Les sportifs professionnels gagnent-ils trop d'argent, selon vous ? » Work, frame A. Borrow from S3-04.

SET-S3A.3 Do children spend too much time on screens?

« Pensez-vous que les enfants passent trop de temps devant les écrans ? » Technology, frame A. Borrow from S3-07 and S3-08.

SET-S3A.4 Must you change your habits when you settle in a new country?

« Faut-il changer ses habitudes quand on s'installe dans un nouveau pays ? » IMM, frame A. Borrow from S3-01, S3-11 and S3-D2.

SET-S3A.5 If you moved to Canada, would you find work easily?

« Si vous vous installiez au Canada, pensez-vous que vous trouveriez facilement du travail ? » IMM, frame A. Borrow from S3-12 and S3-10. The question is in the conditional, so stay in it: « je trouverais, il faudrait, je commencerais ».

5.6 Study model for S3-01: adapt, never recite

Study model: adapt, never recite. This shows how frame A, the S3-01 idea bank and the connectors join up over 4 min 30. It is not an answer to learn. Reproducing a memorised text is fraud under FEI's rules, and it sounds recited. Its examples (the friend in Montréal, the engineer) are placeholders: put your own in their place.

About 470 words (507 if you count l' and qu' as separate words). The times in brackets assume a steady pace of about 105 words a minute.

[0:00] Position. « On me demande s'il est difficile de vivre ou de s'installer à l'étranger. C'est une question qui me touche personnellement, puisque je me prépare moi-même à partir au Canada. Ma réponse est oui : c'est difficile, surtout la première année. Mais je pense que ces difficultés sont en grande partie temporaires, et qu'on peut les surmonter si on s'y prépare bien. » I'm asked whether it's difficult to live or settle abroad. It's a question that touches me personally, since I'm preparing to move to Canada myself. My answer is yes: it's difficult, especially the first year. But I think these difficulties are largely temporary, and that you can overcome them if you prepare well.

[0:35] Argument 1 + example. » First, there's the language barrier. When you don't master the country's language, the simplest things become complicated: opening a bank account, booking a doctor's appointment, understanding a lease. For example, a friend of mine who settled in Montreal spoke good French, but in the first weeks he understood almost nothing at the supermarket, because of the accent and the Québec expressions. He told me he felt like a child, and for an adult that's very frustrating.

[1:25] Argument 2 + example. « Ensuite, il y a le travail. Beaucoup d'immigrants doivent recommencer presque à zéro, parce que leur diplôme n'est pas reconnu ou parce que les employeurs demandent une expérience locale. Je connais un ingénieur qui a travaillé deux ans dans un entrepôt avant de retrouver un poste dans son domaine. Ce n'est pas seulement une question d'argent : c'est aussi une question de confiance en soi. » Next, there's work. Many immigrants have to start again almost from scratch, because their degree isn't recognised or because employers ask for local experience. I know an engineer who worked in a warehouse for two years before getting a job in his field again. It's not only a question of money: it's also a question of self-confidence.

[2:00] Argument 3 + example. « Enfin, il ne faut pas oublier la solitude. Loin de sa famille et de ses amis, on peut avoir le mal du pays, surtout pendant les fêtes. Au Canada, il faut ajouter l'hiver : quand il fait moins vingt et que la nuit tombe à seize heures trente, il est plus difficile de sortir et de rencontrer des gens. » Finally, we mustn't forget loneliness. Far from your family and friends, you can feel homesick, especially during the holidays. In Canada, add the winter: when it's minus twenty and night falls at 4:30, it's harder to go out and meet people.

[2:35] The other side + concession. » That said, I wouldn't want to paint too negative a picture. Although it's difficult, settling abroad is also an extraordinary opportunity: you discover another culture, you become more independent and more open. What's more, today it's much easier than thirty years ago. Thanks to the internet, you can prepare your plans remotely, look for housing and video-call your family every day. And in Canada, many associations help newcomers find a job or make friends. In fact, my friend in Montreal says that if he had to do it all again, he'd go without hesitating.

[3:35] Conclusion + recommendation. » To conclude, I'd say that living abroad is difficult but not impossible, and that the hardest part is often the beginning. In my view, the key is preparation: you need to learn the language before you leave, and not only once you arrive, find out about getting your degree recognised and, above all, reach out to others, for example by volunteering or joining a club. That's exactly what I'm trying to do right now, and I hope that in a few years I'll be able to say it was worth it.

What to notice

How to use it

  1. Read it aloud once against a timer, to feel how long 4 min 30 is.
  2. Underline the signposts and mark the six steps.
  3. Close the page. Write six keywords, one per step, with your own examples.
  4. Speak your own version from the keywords and record it. Compare the structure with the model, not the words.
  5. The next day, answer S3-10, S3-11 or S3-12 the same way: the S3-01 bank feeds all three.
