Prepared 4 November 2026 for a learner starting French from zero who will sit TCF Canada or TEF Canada in late December 2026 and needs NCLC 7 in listening (CO), reading (CE), writing (EE) and speaking (EO). NCLC 7 in all 4 French abilities is also the entry condition for Express Entry's French-language proficiency category (IRCC category-based selection, modified 2026-10-16) [H].

Method and limits

0. Answers in brief

  1. (a) IRCC does not combine sittings.
  2. (b) Neither test lets you resit one skill for IRCC.
    • TCF Canada has four compulsory parts (FEI manual p.15) [H].
    • A TEF Canada immigration registration must include all four in one session (LFA conditions) [H].
    • The modular products (TCF Québec, TCF tout public expression papers, TEFAQ, the 2-module TEF Canada) are not accepted for Express Entry (IRCC language requirements) [H].
  3. The usable workaround is to alternate tests.
    • The 20-day wait applies within each test family.
    • I found no rule linking TCF and TEF, so you can sit them days apart and submit whichever single report shows NCLC 7 in all four [H for each rule; M for the absence of a cross-test rule].
  4. (c) Waits, results, validity and fees.
    • Wait between sittings: 20 days for both at every centre checked, except AF Ottawa (30 days for TEF). FEI's 2024 manual said 30 days for TCF.
    • Results: about 2 weeks; centres quote from 1 day to 4 weeks, and up to 6 weeks in summer at Concordia.
    • Validity: 2 years.
    • Fees: CAD 390–400 in Canada; INR 26,000 in India.
    • Re-marking: not available on either test for a December 2026 sitting (§2, §3).
  5. Seats are the bottleneck [H for each centre]:
    • On 4 Nov 2026, AF Toronto had no TCF or TEF Canada session left in 2026. Its next release, for January–March 2027, opens on 1 Dec 2026 at 10:00.
    • AF Delhi's 18 and 25 November TCF sessions (15 seats each) went on sale on 4 Nov, and the page already marks registration closed and fully booked.
    • AF Chandigarh says its TEF Canada waiting list can reach 10–12 months.
    • No centre page I could read lists a session after 7 December 2026.
  6. (d) The official cut-offs split by skill.
    • Both providers put B2 at 400–499 on their /699 scales.
    • TEF places NCLC 7 lower inside B2 for listening and reading: 434, against TCF's 458 and 453.
    • TCF places it lower for writing and speaking: 10/20 is its lowest B2 mark, while TEF needs 428 in writing and 456 in speaking.
    • [H for the numbers; L–M for reading them as difficulty, because the two scales are calibrated separately.]
  7. The formats point the same way.
    • TEF listening gives reading time before each clip, plays radio interviews twice and now uses 3-option vox-pops [H/M].
    • TCF speaking is the shortest (12 min) and opens with a 2-minute guided interview. TCF also has a large circulating bank of monthly writing and speaking subjects [H for format; L–M for the bank].
  8. What 8 prep and platform pages say:
    • Overall: 6 say neither test is easier or that it depends, 1 says TCF is slightly easier, and none says TEF.
    • Listening leans TEF (2 to 1); reading leans TCF (2 to 0); writing is split (1 each, 1 conditional); speaking leans TCF (2 to 1, 1 "depends").
    • One mock-test dataset of 2,091 sections has more listening sections at B2 or above on TEF (25.6%) than on TCF (19.5%), and no gap in reading (23.1% vs 23.7%) [L–M].
  9. Recommendation [L, my inference from points 6–8]:
    • Make TCF Canada your primary test. Its writing and speaking cut-offs are the lower of the two, and its recurring subject banks suit a plan that learns what repeats first.
    • Add a TEF Canada sitting if listening is your weakest skill in full mock tests.
    • Because neither test lets you resit one skill, book both, a few days apart.

1. (a) Can results from different sittings be combined for IRCC?

No. [H]

What the official texts say

What this means in practice

2. (b) Can you retake only one skill?

Not for IRCC, on either test. [H]

Product Can you sit only some skills? Accepted for Express Entry / PR? Sources
TCF Canada No. 4 compulsory parts, taken the same day Yes, with all 4 on one attestation FEI manual p.15; Concordia; AF Toronto TCF; IRCC language requirements
TCF Québec Yes, any 1 to 4 parts (FEI manual p.17). Concordia prices each part: listening CAD 105, speaking 105, reading 95, writing 95 (Concordia) No. IRCC's French tests are TEF Canada and TCF Canada only IRCC language requirements
TCF tout public Partly. Writing and/or speaking can be taken later if the multiple-choice parts were passed within 18 months, and the new attestation keeps the original expiry date (FEI manual pp.10–11, 26–27, 41) No IRCC language requirements
TEF Canada, 4 épreuves No. An immigration registration must include all 4 in the same session (LFA conditions). AF Toronto does not sell components separately (AF Toronto TEF 4 modules) Yes LFA presentation; IRCC Express Entry language testing
TEF Canada, 2 modules (listening and speaking) Listening and speaking only For citizenship, and per AF Toronto for Francophone Mobility. Not for PR LFA conditions; AF Toronto TEF 2 modules
TEFAQ and single TEF épreuves Yes. AF Chandigarh charges INR 6,785 for 1 module and INR 13,570 for 2 (AF Chandigarh TEF). AF Ottawa prices each épreuve at CAD 97.50 (AF Ottawa TEF) No. AF Ottawa itself says PR needs all four in the same session AF Ottawa TEF; IRCC language requirements

Re-marking, the other way to rescue one skill, is not available for a December 2026 sitting.

3. (c) Waits, results, validity, fees and booking

3.1 Side by side

TCF Canada TEF Canada

4.2 Correct answers needed in listening and reading (unofficial)

4.3 Format differences that matter for an English-speaking beginner

Skill TCF Canada TEF Canada Leans
Listening 39 questions in 35 min. Every clip plays once, and difficulty rises through the test. On computer, the question and options appear on screen together (FEI manual pp.18, 33) [H] 40 questions in 40 min, with fixed reading time before each clip (5–20 s) and answer time after (10–30 s) (LFA listening sample, via team report) [H]. No going back (LFA 2026 handbook, via team report) [H]. LFA's current tutorial, dated 26 Aug 2025, shows vox-pops with 3 options and no no-opinion choice, and says the interview clip is played twice. I checked both screens (vox-pop screen, interview screen) [M–H] TEF
Reading 39 questions in 60 min. Pure comprehension, rising difficulty, and you can move freely between questions (via team report: tcf-format-scoring.md §1.3, citing the TV5MONDE support page) [M] 40 questions in 60 min, including 10 gap-fill questions on words and grammar and 5 speed-reading items (LFA reading sample, via team report) [H] Even: TEF has the lower cut-off; TCF tests comprehension only
Writing 3 tasks in 60 min, of 60–120, 120–150 and 120–180 words. The whole paper can be rated A1 non atteint if any task misses its word range, is off-topic or missing, or is illegible (FEI manual p.23; FEI writing demo) [H] 2 typed tasks: a news story of at least 80 words in 25 min, then an opinion letter of at least 200 words with 3 arguments in 35 min. No official maximum (LFA writing sample, via team report) [H] TCF, slightly: the lowest-B2 cut-off and shorter texts, but strict word ranges
Speaking 12 min, 3 tasks: a 2-min guided interview, a 3.5-min role-play after 2 min of preparation, and a 4.5-min opinion (FEI manual pp.19–20) [H] 15 min, 2 tasks: a 5-min phone call about an ad, then a 10-min attempt to persuade a friend. The examiner is trained to give partial answers, add surprises and push back (LFA examiner handbook, via team report) [H] TCF
Material that repeats One vendor lists 52 monthly sets of writing subjects and 52 of speaking subjects, August 2022 to November 2026. They are paid, and the vendor does not say where they come from (Mes4C2 writing, Mes4C2 speaking) [L–M]. At least 7 platforms circulate numbered listening and reading series presented as rebuilt real papers, for example OPAL listening (55 series) and OPAL reading (52) (via team report: tcf-co-ce-items.md §5.4) [L] Task types identical from 2016 to 2026. LFA's 8 sample writing prompts are word-for-word the same in its 2016 manual and its 2024 sample (via team report: tef-format-scoring.md §2.3) [H]. No candidate-recalled listening or reading bank was found for the current format (via team report: tef-co-ce-items.md §1) [M] TCF for recurring topics; TEF for fixed task shapes

4.4 What prep pages and candidates say (counted)

These are the 8 comparison pages I could read. All are commercial, and none gives candidate counts or pass rates.

# Source (date) Overall Listening Reading Writing Speaking
1 frenchforpr, Toronto prep school (18 Aug 2026) TCF slightly easier for most TCF (shorter clips) TCF, slightly TCF if long essays are hard TCF for hesitant speakers
2 tcftefprep (21 Jul 2026) Neither officially easier TEF may suit weak listeners no difference format only TEF for those who freeze on unscripted questions
3 Learn French With Alexa (25 Sep 2026) Neither officially easier notes TEF's on-screen questions; no ranking — — —
4 tcfcanada.ai (5 Oct 2026) Neither objectively easier leans TEF leans TCF leans TEF (fewer tasks) depends
5 mocko.ai (2026) Neither officially easier — — — —
6 francaisprep (24 Oct 2026) Neither officially easier — — TCF for short tasks, TEF for writing at length; warns about TCF's floor rules TCF, as the shortest test

4.5 Verdict by skill

Skill Easier route to NCLC 7 Why Confidence
Listening TEF Canada Lower cut-off (434 vs 458); reading time before clips; interviews played twice; 3-option vox-pops. Prep pages lean TEF 2 to 1, and the mock data favours TEF M
Reading Even TEF's cut-off is lower (434 vs 453), but 10 of its questions are grammar and vocabulary gap-fills. TCF tests comprehension only, where an English speaker's cognates help. Prep pages lean TCF 2 to 0; the mock data shows no gap L–M
Writing TCF Canada, slightly NCLC 7 is TCF's lowest B2 mark (10/20), against TEF's 428; the three texts are short; monthly subjects circulate. The risks: the word-range rule, and one point (9 against 10) costs a whole NCLC level L–M
Speaking TCF Canada NCLC 7 is TCF's lowest B2 mark, against TEF's upper-half-B2 456; 12 minutes instead of 15; an opening task you can script; TEF's examiner is trained to push back. Prep pages lean TCF 2 to 1 M

4.6 Overall recommendation and what to do if one skill is weaker [L, my inference from §4.1–4.5]

  1. Primary test: TCF Canada.
    • Two of the four skills favour it, and they are the production skills, which one source names as where candidates most often fall short.
    • Its recurring writing and speaking subjects fit the plan to learn what repeats first.
  2. If one skill is likely to be weaker:
    • Listening: choose TEF Canada.
    • Speaking or writing: choose TCF Canada.
    • Reading: either. TEF's cut-off is lower, and TCF's format is simpler.
  3. Which test lets you redo just the failed skill? Neither, for IRCC.
    • The nearest substitute is to book both tests a few days apart: for example TCF, then TEF, then TCF again at least 20 days after the first TCF.
    • Each sitting must still clear all four skills on its own report.
  4. Practise both formats only if you book both. The skills are the same, but the task shapes differ: 3 short writing tasks against 2 longer ones, and 3 speaking tasks against 2 role-plays.

6. Conflicts found

Topic Version 1 Version 2 Use
TCF wait between sittings 20 days: Concordia, AF Toronto, AF Delhi, and current FEI pages as seen in search extracts (via team report) 30 days: FEI manual, Version J, Sept 2024, p.27 20 days; confirm with your centre
TEF wait between sittings 20 days: LFA, AF Toronto, AF Chandigarh 30 days between registrations: AF Ottawa LFA's 20 days; a centre may be stricter
TEF results About 2 weeks (LFA); 1–15 days (AF Toronto); 7–14 days (AF Chandigarh) 4–8 weeks (one passage on AF Ottawa's page) Plan for 2–3 weeks
TCF re-marking Suspended from 1 Sep 2026 (AF Delhi relaying FEI; Concordia) Offered at CAD 100 (AF Ottawa TCF page) Suspended
AF Toronto 2-module TEF fee CAD 195 (FAQ) CAD 390 (registration steps) Ask the centre; not relevant to PR
Start of the 2-year validity Issue date (LFA; AF Toronto) Test date (francaisprep) IRCC does not say; plan from the test date

7. Open questions

  1. Whether IRCC would ever accept two attestations for one language. No official text allows it. The officer-instruction sentence rules it out for federal skilled workers, but I found no wording specific to CEC or FST.
  2. Whether the TCF 20-day wait also applies between different TCF versions, for example TCF Québec followed by TCF Canada.
  3. Whether any reachable centre has a TCF or TEF Canada session between 8 and 31 December 2026. None of the pages I read lists one, but AF Delhi's PDF calendar was not opened.
  4. What large numbers of candidates say about TEF against TCF by skill (Reddit r/ImmigrationCanada and r/French, Facebook groups, YouTube). These could not be read in this run.
  5. Whether the TEF listening changes in the 2025 tutorial (two plays for interviews, 3-option vox-pops) apply in every live session. They appear in LFA's own tutorial, but I found no LFA announcement of them.
  6. Whether IRCC's 2 years run from the test date or the result date.
